Getting Dirty

Today is the day! I’m gonna do it! I have plans to retreat to the back yard about 2 PM, gloves, shovel, wheelbarrow and seeds in hand. It’s time to put in the sugar snap peas, onions and spinach seed.
Dirt must run in my veins. By October I have had my fill of weeding, canning and tilling the ground. By that time the dirt must be thick enough in my veins to satisfy the cravings, but as the days turn into weeks and weeks into months of snow covered, frozen tundra the craving returns. About the middle of January I start checking the stores for seed packages. Around the same time I get anxious each time I approach the mailbox in anticipation of a Burpee’s or Henry Field catalog. By February my thin blood is resorting to herbs on the windowsill.
Although it’s really too early to start many seeds indoors, I am going to plant a few that I can put out early. Maybe if I have tray after tray of pathetic plants lining my windows spring will be sympathetic and come just a bit sooner this year.

When Guardian Angels Work Overtime

Each day the sun rises to grant our need for warmth, light and nourishment. Although dark clouds may hover over our section of the earth, the sun is still there, doing her job. And so it is with the guardian angel(s) that watch over my family. They are not evident by the fluttering of wings, tinkling of harp cords or glow from a golden halo. They come quietly, unannounced when turbulent skies threaten to sour our world. Though the trails of our faith may not be completely removed from our lives, many times the blows are lessened, made bearable by the constant protection of our unseen protectors.
Today was one of the days that thunder arose in the west, aiming its fierce bolts in the direction of my middle son. His journey to the garage to fix our automobile could have been his last journey on this earth. While there a car plowed into the building a few feet from where he stood. Bricks flew, dust rolled and cars crashed from the high-speed impact. My son was shaken, but unharmed. I believe the prayers on his behalf were heard and yes, answered.
Unfortunately one of the mechanics sustained major injuries, being pinned between the car and a wall. I cannot begin to explain why things happen to some people and not others. I know we all have trials to overcome and tests to pass before we are worthy to walk through the golden gates. These trials come in different packages; some large, some coarse, some so heavy that we need a friend to help us carry the load. We are all promised that we will not be given more than we can handle. I truly believe that whatever the pain, sorrow and suffering Jesus shoulder’s the lion’s share of it. My prayers are with this man and his family, and all who walk the earth, each and every soul in need of a prayer, an angel and a friend.

Journaling Prompt: I am thinking…
1-4-10

I am thinking about winter with its icy fingers creeping down our backs, lingering long and harsh until the gentle breath of spring blossoms melts away its chilling hold.. Winter swoops from the north, swallowing up the blazing ball known in the summer as the sun. Winter then regurgitates a cold, distant orb that periodically immerges from between the cumulus clouds long enough for us to believe that winter will eventually come to an end. When in reality, the real sun spends the season hanging around the Caribbean beaches entertaining scantly clad, energetic vacationers. Meanwhile we survive with the help of our thermal underwear, ultraviolet tanning beds and vitamin D supplements.
But, like all seasons winter has its purpose in nature’s circle of life, giving rest to God’s creatures, time to contemplate the pages of the Book of Life that have been turned and anticipate opportunities that lie, undiscovered in the remaining chapters.

Journaling Prompt: What color represents you?
1-4-2010

If you looked into the dictionary under a color and expected to find my name among the definitions, it would be a game of catch-me-if-you can. Any given day or even moment, I could be found sulking under depression blue, then, like invisible ink the name would fade and reappear under hot pink, sizzling and mischievous. Then I might slide into sunny yellow or prance into peachy keen.
The colors would change, much like my eyes with the mood and the ambiance of the surroundings, a chameleon changing with the tides, a brilliant rainbow fading into an azure sky. Being one color would stifle my creativity. My pallet will always be filled with every imaginable hue, ready for my brush to color my world.
